21st August 2009 the purpose of this blog

About me: I am a painter working mostly in oils and making (mostly) abstract art. I also make sculpture and ceramics. My website (http://www.simonbeer.net/) attracts quite a bit of traffic and I do (sometimes) sell work from it. I have a studio and workshop, in North Yorkshire, which I share sometimes with my friend and fellow artist Adam King. The purpose of this blog: I want to talk to other people, artists or anyone who has something to say, to exchange ideas and start discussions. In short I have started this blog to try to get some feedback about what I do and to contact other people interested in, or making art.

Here is an example of a recent painting, it comes from observing and thinking about waves and the sea. I find it very hard to give my work titles, I don't really deal in words but people / galleries seem to need titles presumably to help them understand what they are looking at. Abstract art (for me anyway) is not neccisarliy about representation. I would be quite happy if 10 different people looked at one of my pieces and came away with 10 different interpretations, feelings, whatever. I believe in the idea of perspectivism.
Something I find quite interesting is that, people are quite willing to listen to a piece of music without knowing anything about it, understanding it. It makes them feel things, they know whether they like it or not, they don't have to have it explained to them. In short they can approach it with an open, receptive mind. This ability seems to evaporate when they are confronted by abstract art, which may have patterns and rhythms. Is there such a huge difference between the way we interpret and react to sound and vision?

  1. really interesting question. maybe it's because we are involved with music from a much earlier age than art, so we feel comfortable with it.

  2. Could be - or it could be because we rely more heavily on our sight than our hearing, so we need visual stimulii to make sense in a concrete way? Any more thoughts?
